For the first time in 30 years, the start of the Sertões International Rally will leave Paraná

The beauty of the Iguaçu Falls in Foz do Iguaçu (West), one of the Seven Wonders of Nature, will be the opening scene of the Sertões International Rally, the world’s largest time rally. Governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior on Wednesday (25) accompanied the inauguration of the competition in a state where, for the first time in history, the start scheduled for August 26 will be held.

The state government is a partner of the Parana Adventure and Nature Games calendar through the Sports General Supervision. On the route from Paraná, in addition to the exit from Foz do Iguaçu, it will also pass through Umuarama in the northwest and then to Presidente Prudente (SP).

“Brazil has more than 5,000 cities vying to host an event like this one that is of great importance in the global automotive calendar and attracts press from all over the world. This is very important to us as one of our goals is to promote the tourist attractions of Paraná, ”said Ratinho Junior.

“After two years, we are recovering from the pandemic. Foz do Iguaçu has a strong boom in the sector, which is a great calling for the city. Moreover, it passes through Umuarama, showing the beauty of the Northwest, ”he said.

The governor also noted the infrastructure investments in Foz, which prepare the city to host large events and large numbers of tourists. “We’ve managed to strip the airport runway extension, which has become one of the largest in the south of the country, the second bridge with Paraguay, and we will now double the Cataratas Autobahn,” he said.

THE BIGGEST EVER – The 2022 edition, which commemorates the bicentenary of Brazil’s independence, will also be the largest in the history of the international Sertões rally. Traditionally, Sertões lasts eight days, but the jubilee 30th edition will have practically twice as many days to traverse the country.

In 15 days, they will travel 7,216 kilometers, of which 4,811 kilometers are special stages, crossing eight states in five Brazilian regions. Arrival is scheduled for September 10 in Salinópolis (PA).

The registration is still open and the organization expects the participation of around 300 competitors from four types of Sertões: cars, motorcycles, quadricycles and UTV. They will drive through the cities of Paraná, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Piauí, Maranhão and Para.

In addition, the forecast provides for the gathering of up to 3,000. people, including the technical team, and the transition from 800 thousand. R $ up to R $ 1 million per day in participating cities. “In 2022, Sertões is no longer the largest rally in the Americas and becomes the largest rally in the world. And one of the goals is to show Brazil and promote its beauty internationally, ”said the competition’s CEO Joaquim Monteiro.

“Sertões arrived in Foz do Iguaçu in 2015, so there is nothing more honorable than to do this special edition in 2022, on the bicentenary of independence and when we turn 30, in a place that has such splendor as the Waterfalls”, Monteiro emphasized. “It will be an epic edition that will challenge the machines and human beings who will traverse the country, traversing five regions to show a Brazil that few Brazilians know.”

With the longest length in three decades of competition, the rally organizer Dunas Race has created two separate events for those unable to complete the entire route: Sertões Sul and Sertões Norte. The first, from August 26 to September 3, with a prologue and seven stages, ends in Palmas. The second route begins in the capital city of Tocantins, also with seven stages.

TOURIST PROMOTION – The General Superintendent of Sport, Hélio Wirbinski, emphasized that sports events are great tourism inducers. “We bring 3,000 people, 300 competitors, full hotels here and promote the economy of Foz do Iguaçu and Umuarama. This is how we operate in the sport of Paraná, bringing great events to our cities, ”he noted.

In addition to the car competition, the Sertões International Rally serves as a showcase for the promotion of Brazilian tourism. As part of this proposal, the Iguaçu Falls are one of the four “treasures” of this edition, alongside the Jalapão region in Tocantins, the Viana canyons in Piauí and the Bananal Island, also in Tocantins.

This is the second time that Foz do Iguaçu has been included in the competition program. In 2015, the race reached the Brazilian side of the Itaipu power plant. As the organizers say, Foz will provide the caravan with unique and attractive images that will make it one of the most sought after places by tourists from around the world. The Iguaçu Falls impress with their beauty and the volume of water, making the set of 275 waterfalls a natural heritage site.

The city, 640 kilometers from Curitiba, is still home to the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, the world’s largest for power generation. As this is the starting point for the challenge, players and teams will have the chance to get to know everything up close, even in a rush to prepare.

The mayor of Foz do Iguaçu, Chico Brasileiro, stressed that this will be an important moment for the resumption of tourism after the pandemic. “This event is a great achievement for Parana and the cities she will visit. The fact of leaving Foz is one more attraction we will have in August, both for the dissemination of our travel destination internationally and for the economic movement, ”he said.

FREQUENCY – The inauguration was accompanied by João Evaristo Debiasi, Secretary of State for Social Communication and Culture; the Mayor of Umuarama Hermes Pimentel; Operations Director of the International Sertões Raids, Eleonora Guedes; Director of Innovation in General Sport Supervision Tiago Campos; and state deputy Guto Silva.
